Digitrapper® pH-Z monitoring is a catheter-based test using a combination of pH and impedance sensors for the identification of reflux at multiple locations, including the oesophagus and pharynx.
Data collected differentiates acid and non-acid reflux in patients with an array of symptoms. With these measurements, doctors can evaluate the number of reflux events, the acid content of each event and how long each event lasted.
This information can often aid doctors in diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and other disorders.
The procedure:
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the nose & throat. A slimline catheter is passed through one nostril, into the lower oesophagus. The catheter then connects to a ‘palm sized’ data receiver which is carried over the shoulder.
During the study, you will be asked to keep a diary of; when you eat, sleep, and any symptoms that you experience. These symptoms will then be analysed along with the information collected from the receiver.
Patient preparation:
To ensure a successful test, please follow all instructions carefully. Failure to accurately and completely prepare for your procedure may result in the need for an additional procedure and both will be billed for.
5 Days prior to procedure:
- Several (acid-blocking) medications alter the pH level of the stomach and must be discontinued unless otherwise instructed; all other usual medications may be continued.
- Losec® (Omeprazole)
- Pariet® (Rabeprazole)
- Somac® (Pantoprazole)
- Nexium® (Esompeprazole)
- Zoton® (Lansoprazole)
- Zantac® (Ranitidine)
- Pepcidine® (Famotidine)
- Tazac® (Nizatidine)
24 hours prior to procedure:
- Stop taking all “over-the-counter” antacids.
