THE MELBOURNE GASTROINTESTINAL INVESTIGATION UNIT (MGIU) was established in 1997 with the aims of providing a range of specialised gastrointestinal (GI) investigations and as a conduit for clinical research.

MGIU specialises in upper gastrointestinal physiology testing. For over 10 years we have been performing Breath Tests; investigations for bacterial overgrowth and sugar malabsorption.

We have extensive knowledge & experience with PillCam procedures and our capsule endoscopy equipment was the first of its kind to be purchased in the Southern Hemisphere.  

Investigations are conducted by hospital based Gastroenterologists and specialty trained nurses & technicians.

The research arm, of the unit, has been involved in a range of multicentre studies in the areas of gastro oesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, pro-biotics and new therapies for inflammatory bowel disease.

In the past we have participated in research studies focused on analysing: aspects of capsule endoscopy, staging of rectal cancer, genetic testing in bowel cancer and the treatment for hepatitis C.
